## Core Principles

1. **Snapshot-first**: Always `snapshot` after navigating or after any action that changes the DOM. Refs (`@e1`, `@e2`, etc.) are invalidated on page change.
2. **Wait for stability**: After clicks that trigger navigation or network requests, use `wait_ready` which also does a snapshot.
3. **Re-snapshot after every state change**: Clicking a link, submitting a form, opening a dropdown/modal, or any dynamic content load requires a fresh `snapshot -i`.
4. **Use refs from the most recent snapshot only**: Never reference `@e` refs from a previous snapshot — they are stale.
5. **Fail gracefully**: Use `set -euo pipefail` and include basic error handling.

Use `eval` to run JavaScript in the browser context. **Shell quoting can corrupt complex expressions** -- use `--stdin` or `-b` to avoid issues.

**Why this matters:** When the shell processes your command, inner double quotes, `!` characters (history expansion), backticks, and `$()` can all corrupt the JavaScript before it reaches agent-browser. The `--stdin` and `-b` flags bypass shell interpretation entirely.

**Rules of thumb:**
- Single-line, no nested quotes -> regular `eval 'expression'` with single quotes is fine
- Nested quotes, arrow functions, template literals, or multiline -> use `eval --stdin <<'EVALEOF'`
- Programmatic/generated scripts -> use `eval -b` with base64

3. **If the task involves data extraction**: Navigate → snapshot → use `get text` on target elements → write to file or stdout.
4. **If the task involves multi-page navigation**: After every page transition, `wait_ready` then `snapshot` before interacting.
5. **If the task involves dynamic content** (SPAs, modals, dropdowns): After triggering the dynamic element, `wait` for the new content, then `snapshot -i -C` (use `-C` to catch cursor-interactive elements).
6. **If the task involves screenshots or PDFs**: Navigate → wait for full load → `screenshot` or `pdf`.
7. **If ref-based interaction fails or the page uses non-standard elements**: Fall back to semantic locators (`find text`, `find label`, `find role`).

Compact element references that reduce context usage dramatically for AI agents.

## How Refs Work

Traditional approach:
